Background of the Study

Respiratory emergencies, including acute respiratory failure, asthma attacks, and pulmonary embolism, are common in intensive care units (ICUs). Nurses play a critical role in managing these emergencies, but their preparedness can vary. This study investigates the level of preparedness of nurses in handling respiratory emergencies in ICUs in Benue State hospitals.

Statement of the Problem

Respiratory emergencies require prompt and effective interventions to prevent patient deterioration or death. However, there may be gaps in the preparedness of ICU nurses in Benue State hospitals, due to factors such as insufficient training, lack of equipment, and poor protocols. This study will examine the preparedness of nurses in managing these critical situations.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the preparedness of ICU nurses in handling respiratory emergencies.

  2. To evaluate the availability of resources and training programs for respiratory emergency management.

  3. To identify the challenges that impact the ability of ICU nurses to manage respiratory emergencies.

Research Questions

  1. How prepared are ICU nurses in Benue State hospitals to handle respiratory emergencies?

  2. What resources and training programs are available to ICU nurses for managing respiratory emergencies?

  3. What barriers do ICU nurses face in responding to respiratory emergencies?

Research Hypotheses

  1. ICU nurses in Benue State hospitals are not fully prepared to handle respiratory emergencies due to gaps in training and resources.

  2. Adequate resources and training programs improve the preparedness of ICU nurses in managing respiratory emergencies.

  3. Barriers such as limited access to equipment, training, and support hinder the effective management of respiratory emergencies.
